The Certificate in English as a Second Language helps educators, who often only speak English, teach English language learners both English and other academic content during the same instructional day. Students will learn to:
- Understand theories of language acquisition
- Implement strategies that promote cultural understanding
- Use teaching practices that meet the needs of English language learners
The series of courses in this certificate program are approved by the Illinois State Board of Education for an endorsement in Illinois. The coursework provides teachers the knowledge and skills to successfully demonstrate the English as a New Language Standards established by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
Professional licensure, certification, endorsement, and salary benefit requirements for educators vary from state to state and district to district. American College of Education cannot guarantee licensure, certification, endorsement, or salary benefits. It is the students' responsibility to understand and comply with requirements in the jurisdiction where they choose to work as an administrator. In all cases, students are solely responsible for determining whether they are eligible for licensure and to confirm the precise requirements that must be satisfied to be licensed in that state before beginning the program.
