American College of Education | October 05, 2009
Chicago, IL – Less than a year ago, Melissa Hooker was working toward her Master's Degree through the American College of Education. Now, just eight months after having completed it, the American College of Education alumna has been recognized as one of ten recipients of the 2009 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching. A gala ceremony in Chicago honored the winners September 25. The non-profit Golden Apple organization, dedicated to recognizing and developing outstanding teachers, has honored Chicago-area teachers with the prestigious award since 1986.
Melissa Hooker received her undergraduate degree in Music Education at Northwest Missouri State University, and her Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from American College of Education in January 2009. She began her music teaching career 11 years ago in Kansas. In 2001, she moved back to Illinois to teach for Chicago Public schools at Gray Elementary in Portage Park. Since 2005, she has been the music teacher at Oscar Mayer Magnet School.
"The skills I learned and honed during my studies with American College of Education have helped me better understand how my administration works, how to better communicate with them and my peers, and has provided valuable insights into how school-wide decisions affect my classroom," Hooker said.
Over 900 other pre-K to third grade educators were nominated. As part of the selection process, Hooker wrote nine essays. Having just completed her portfolio, the last requirement of the Educational Leadership program, Hooker was practiced at writing concise essays "filled with heart and soul without the fluff."
