American College of Education Announces English as a Second Language and Bilingual Endorsements
February 25, 2009 – Chicago, IL The American College of Education announced the launch of two new opportunities for educators to complete coursework necessary for an English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement or a bilingual endorsement. Each program consists of graduate-level courses and will cost approximately $2,500 plus fees. Educators will take the courses completely online, having access to the most current research and prominent experts available on ESL and Bilingual education.
ESL specialization
The English as a Second Language specialization prepares educators to work effectively with English speakers
of other languages and provide leadership in curriculum and instruction in schools. The program focuses on
instructional methods and materials for teaching language and content; the importance of culture in
addressing learning needs; testing and evaluation; and developing standards-driven curriculum to use with
speakers of other languages.
Bilingual specialization
The Bilingual specialization prepares educators to work effectively in a bilingual setting and provide
leadership in curriculum and instruction in their schools. The program focuses on instructional methods and
materials for teaching language and content to English Language Learners; the importance of culture in
addressing learning needs; testing and evaluation; and developing curriculum for English Language Learners.
Educators can take just 6 more courses to complete a master's degree in curriculum and instruction with either an ESL or Bilingual specialization. The entire master's program is available for under $5,000. In most states, these degree programs lead to endorsement in the ESL or Bilingual specialty areas. Illinois teachers completing these programs will receive their respective ESL or Bilingual endorsement. In Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana, teachers completing these programs meet the course requirements for state endorsement.
