Carondelet Leadership Academy Hires Mendez as Team Leader

New St. Louis Charter School Adds National Board Certified Teacher

St. Louis, MO - Apryll Mendez has joined the new South St. Louis City-based Carondelet Leadership Academy (CLA) as team leader. CLA opened on August 23, 2010 as a charter elementary school operated by the Chicago-based American Quality Schools (AQS).

In her position, Mendez oversees the school's curriculum and mentors other teachers, serves as an instructional coach, observes classes and analyzes student performance to ensure academic progress, helps teachers with lesson planning and models successful teaching methods by instructing student classes.

She is a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT), a top qualification held by only 82,000 teachers nationwide (www.nbpts.org).

Mendez taught for seven years in Chicago, IL, most recently as a fourth grade reading arts teacher with the Chicago Public Schools. She previously taught second through fourth grades at Holy Childhood of Jesus in Mascoutah, IL.

Mendez received her bachelor's degree in education from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, IL, and her master's degree in curriculum and instruction from American College of Education.

Founded in Chicago in 1999, AQS is a nonprofit, regional education management organization that operates more than one dozen successful charter elementary and high schools in the greater Chicago area, northern Indiana and St. Louis, Mo. Sponsored by Missouri Baptist University, CLA currently serves 225 students, kindergarten through fifth grade.
