ACE students enrolled in our Master of Arts in Teaching and Transition programs must complete student teaching as part of their required coursework. The field-based experience/student teaching activities are an integral part of their learning and provide ACE students with a valuable opportunity to relate acquired theoretical knowledge about essential elementary and secondary teaching to observation of students in schools. A student teaching experience is required for a licensure recommendation in the State of Indiana.
Student teaching requirement and evaluation
The student teaching experience will be guided, monitored, and evaluated by a collaborative team composed of the student teacher candidate, a mentor teacher, and an American College of Education field supervisor. This collaborative team will meet virtually through a Virtual Supervision Model once a week to assess the progress of the student teacher. Team members will use video conferencing, online learning techniques, and videos submitted by the student teacher candidate to illustrate his or her engagement with students in diverse settings and in content areas.
Securing a field placement
Students complete field-based experiences/student teaching activities at school sites throughout the program. Internship, student teaching, and/or field experience activities are designed to be compatible with the US school system. In order to ensure appropriate supervision and equivalent experiences, students must complete all field-based experiences/student teaching activities in the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Students with special circumstances (such as working at a Department of Defense School) may apply for a Clinical Experience Exception Approval to complete field-based experiences/student teaching activities outside of the jurisdictions listed above. Special circumstances include, but are not limited to Department of Defense schools or American-based international schools.
Note: ACE will help establish partnerships with schools to provide students the opportunity to learn about how issues such as classroom planning and management, assessment, and diversity influences student learning. As part of the Virtual Supervision Model, your collaborative team (the student teacher candidate, a mentor teacher, and an American College of Education field supervisor) will assist you in securing a field placement.
