Anthony Ogden, Ph.D.

Dr. Anthony C. Ogden is a well-known and respected professional with over 25 years of experience in educational leadership.
Ogden earned a bachelor’s degree from Berea College and then later studied at the School for International Training (SIT) where he earned a master’s degree in International and Intercultural Management (MIIM), with a specialization in international education. Ogden completed a Ph.D. at The Pennsylvania State University in Educational Theory and Policy with a dual title in Comparative and International Education.
Ogden is the founding partner of Gateway Internationl Group, an organization committed to advancing international education into the next generation of higher education.
Earlier in his career, Ogden held leadership positions at Pennsylvania State University, where he provided oversight in the administration of education abroad and exchanges programming and worked in close cooperation with faculty and staff of all 24 Penn State campuses located throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Back in his home state of Kentucky, he served as the executive director of Education Abroad and Exchanges at the University of Kentucky, where he Ied dramatic growth in all aspects of education abroad and exchanges programming and co-founded the Kentucky Council on Education Abroad (KCEA). At Michigan State University (MSU), Ogden directed one of the largest education abroad offices in the country and provided oversight of diverse programming to support the nearly 3,000 MSU students that earn credit abroad each year.
Ogden most recently served as the senior international officer at the University of Wyoming, where he provided leadership and vision in advancing comprehensive internationalization initiatives that are consistent with the goals, mission and resources of the University. He directly led the work of the Office of International Students and Scholars (including international student recruitment), the Office of Education Abroad, the Center for Global Studies, the English Language Center and UW in Scotland. He also served as a visiting associate professor of higher education in the College of Education.
Ogden has been an active member of NAFSA: Association of International Educators since 1996, through which he has given numerous presentations, workshops and webinars on various aspects of international education. Ogden is also actively involved with the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA), the European Association of International Education (EAIE), and The Forum on Education Abroad. Ogden has served on numerous boards focused on higher education and was a founding member of the Fund for Education Abroad.
A noted educational expert by the U.S. Department of State, Ogden has conducted formal educational program evaluations in 25 countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe and is frequently invited to provide international education consulting and support services to numerous universities and organizations, most recently with Dartmouth College, the Univ. of Massachusetts Amherst, and the Centre of the Republic of Slovenia for Mobility and European Educational and Training Programmes (CMEPIUS), Slovenia’s national agency for advancing international student and scholar mobility.
As an educator, scholar and three-time Fulbright recipient, Ogden has actively pursued engagement in research and scholarship that informs practice. He has numerous publications to his credit, including the very widely read essay, “The View from the Veranda: Understanding Today’s Colonial Student” (2007). His recent publications include two co-edited books focused on the emerging issue of scholar-practitioners in international higher education (Symposium Books, 2016) and integrating education abroad into the undergraduate curriculum (Stylus, 2019). His newest book provides a comprehensive compendium on international education research(Routledge, 2020.)He serves as an external reviewer for numerous scholarly journals, including the Journal of Studies in International Education and the Journal of International Students. Ogden regularly teaches and offers seminars around the world on topics related to international education and global engagement.
Ogden has lived in Japan, Australia and Cameroon and has professional experience in over 80 countries. He is married to his lifelong partner, whom he met in Japan many years ago. In his spare time, Ogden enjoys traveling, reading, and the outdoors.

Research Interests
A scholar-practitioner of higher education, Ogden has actively pursued applied research and scholarship opportunities with the explicit goal of informing the emerging profession of international education. His publications have intentionally aligned with the evolving needs of the profession and have been influenced by the increasing sophistication and complexity of international education research.
