Dr. Verona S.E. Portis is a devoted educational leader and an advocate for at-risk students in the Chicago Public School system. She is the proud mother of two young men ages fourteen and nine, and a devoted wife. Her desire to teach children led her to pursue a career in the education field. Through her role as an educator and administrator she has implemented an array of research-based teaching strategies and assessments for teachers to accommodate various learning modalities across the content areas. She firmly believes that children will learn when they are provided with a dedicated, committed instructional leader, teacher, and a positive learning environment.

Dr. Portis earned her diploma from a Chicago Public High School. She attained her Bachelors of Science Degree in Elementary Education with endorsements in Language Arts, Social Science and Mathematics. She went on to acquire two Masters Degrees in Curriculum and Instruction and in Educational Leadership and Administration. Also, her life-long goal of earning her Doctoral Degree in Urban Education Leadership was achieved at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Portis has worked as an elementary school administrator in some of Chicago’s most challenging communities. She exemplifies positive attitude and character through supportive relations with students, staff and community constituents. Dr. Portis is an advocate for collaboration, support and student achievement. As an administrator, she firmly believes that all stakeholders must hold themselves accountable as they provide all students with the opportunity to achieve by creating positive learning environments where students excel. Dr. Portis has successfully written many grants to assist her in creating an effective learning environment for her school community.

Lastly, Dr. Portis is involved in quite a few organizations. She ensures that she is always giving back to her community by volunteering at varied events. Each year, Dr. Portis facilitates three fundraiser events in order to raise funds for seniors graduating from high school and continuing college students. Dr. Portis keeps in contact with many of her former students and she continues to mentor them as they navigate through life to become successful and productive citizens who give back to their community. She has won numerous awards for education and her community service work. Reading, shopping, and attend sports events with her family are her hobbies and she ensures that she makes time in her busy schedule to enjoy them. Dr. Portis strongly verifies the quote by Nelson Mandela which simply states that, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
