Before you know it – we will be counting down to the new year. A lot of us will be concocting New Year’s resolutions that we will stick to for a month and then give up again until next year. This year, let’s change the conversation! This year, I am making the pact to myself to create resolutions with meaning behind them. Meaning beyond losing the 10 extra holiday pounds or joining a new gym. 2019 is the year of self- care and resolutions that stick.
1. Make 2019 the year of gratitude
This idea came from a friend who had a transformative year after taking the time to truly be thankful. This year, I am taking on the resolution of writing and sending a thank- you card every, single day. Buy a box of 365 cards and take a minute each day to say thank you using good old snail mail. Not sure what to say to your teacher friend down the hall? How about simply sharing how they’ve encouraged or inspired you?
2. Make 2019 the year of the 5K
Every month, I am going to sign up for a different 5K. This is a new take on the ever- popular exercise resolutions. I will have to walk and run to train, but it will be for an event that I get to enjoy. 5K races usually benefit a worthy cause, so this will double as philanthropy. You can make this one a family bonding experience, too!
3. Make 2019 the year of reading
Step outside your comfort zone by reading one book per month. Take this a step further by reading a book for a different genre each month. You can even join a local book club to discuss your book picks and make new friends.
4. Make 2019 the year of travel
Check out some place new once per month! I do not mean long and lavish trips—there are bound to be beautiful and unique places 2-4 hours from your door. Take a day trip or spend one night in a different city each month to discover new favorite places. Planning trips to look forward to is seen as a way to be happy and fulfilled. Make it a goal to try at least one of the trips solo!
5. Make 2019 the year of organization
Clutter robs joy! Make it a goal to clean out an area each month. Get rid of items you no longer use by donating them, recycling or tossing them it into the garbage. Reorganize your space and feel rejuvenated. You will feel so much better when you can find what you are looking for the first time.
