PRIOR CREDIT EVALUATION POLICY

Approved: 2012.10.08 | Revised: 2018.06.06 | Effective Date: 2018.07.09

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

American College of Education (ACE) acknowledges students may have earned previous postsecondary credit or gained equivalent experience prior to their current enrollment at ACE. An ACE student or applicant can request the college to review all previous postsecondary education coursework or equivalency for consideration. The college will award credit to the student based on the standards listed on the “Prior Credit Evaluation Grid” contained in this policy and will award or fulfill credits accordingly.

SUBJECT OF THE POLICY

As a college that serves the adult learner, American College of Education is committed to the acceptance of prior postsecondary education credits from other institutions, from prior enrollments at ACE, or from assessment of prior learning through work, life, or military experiences. The college evaluates applicants or students credit transfer requests using the Prior Credit Evaluation Grid and will award credits accordingly.

The college may grant transfer credit or credit fulfillment for all ACE courses except for dedicated first courses, capstone courses, student teaching or field experience courses, and dissertation courses. For credit to be awarded, the course requested must be equivalent to the requested ACE course or requirement in credit hour length, course content, and grade-level equivalency.

If a student does leave ACE for any reason, a new evaluation of credit transfers would be needed to ensure compliance with the policy upon the student’s return.

PROCEDURES

External Transfer Credits (for credits taken outside of ACE)

  • ACE applicants or students submit a request to have prior credits evaluated. The applicant or student must submit the request at least one term (5-week term) prior to taking the potentially impacted course(s).
  • ACE applicants or students must include, at minimum, an unofficial copy of their transcripts for a decision to be offered.
  • The ACE applicant or student must provide an official transcript before the actual credit can be awarded in the student record.
  • The college will evaluate the request in comparison to the “Prior Credit Evaluation Grid.”
  • The college will provide the applicant or student a decision via email.
  • The college will apply the credit to the student’s record when the following occurs:
    • Official transcripts for prior credit have been received.
    • The individual has started the program and the drop/add period has passed.
  • If an applicant or student does not agree with the evaluation, they can appeal via the general appeal process.

Internal Credit

  • The ACE registration office will review all prior courses taken at ACE and apply appropriate credit after the drop/add period in the first term of the student’s return.
  • If a past student wishes to have credits reviewed prior to returning to ACE, they should contact the registration office to request this review.
  • If an applicant or student does not agree with the evaluation, they can appeal via the general appeal process.

Previous Experience

  • The institution may award credit based on a student’s previous experience as documented a credit recommender (i.e. ACE credit for military experience, NCCRS, or ACE credit network) or through experience evaluated by recognized exams (i.e. CLEP).
