Each week, American College of Education is sharing #WednesdayWisdom from the sages on our staff, faculty, student, and alumni rolls. This week’s wisdom comes courtesy of Joseph Chan, an ACE certificate student and admissions advisor at Trident University International.

With a bachelor’s degree from California Baptist University and a master’s degree from the University of Southern California, Joseph Chan is no stranger to academia. But the admissions advisor, who is slated to finish a certificate program in advanced graduate studies at ACE in November, knows there is more to an education than scholarship–namely, the relationships you develop in pursuit of scholarship. His advice to prospective and current ACE students? Nurture those relationships, especially with your professors.

“Try to network with the professors early on,” he says. “I really took the effort to reach out to each one of my professors (and) tell them my goal with the class and my intent for the program.”

“Each of my professors has been very responsive in going from A to Z,” he continues. “‘Here’s some tips I can provide to you; I have a connection who works here.’ They’ve been introducing me and it’s really opened a lot of doors for my career.”
