In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, American College of Education is committing to supporting local survivors.
ACE is hosting a collegewide recycling drive now through Oct. 26 to collect toiletries, gently-used clothing and old cellphones in support of two critical organizations near the school’s regional offices: the Julian Center in Indianapolis and the Genesis Women’s Shelter and Support in Dallas.
“We’ve chosen these two shelters based on their reach in the areas that they serve,” said ACE Vice President of Human Resources and B Corp Benefits Officer KK Byland. “We’ve donated to these shelters in the past and know how badly they are in need of donations. We’re encouraging all employees and students to get involved with a domestic violence shelter in their community. It doesn’t have to be these two. We’re really trying to impact as many domestic violence centers as we can.”
The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that as many as 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience domestic violence.
Byland noted that the college has an obligation to address the issue given its status as a B Corp, which calls for businesses with the designation to use their platform and profits to be a force for social good.
“Part of being a B Corp means that we’re committed to our communities, and domestic violence is prevalent in all communities everywhere,” she said. “Shelters like these exist to help survivors find their voice and, in many cases, serve as a safe haven. Supporting these organizations is our way of supporting survivors and telling them that we care.”
Interested parties can donate money or in-kind gifts by visiting the Julian Center and Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support online.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, the National Domestic Violence Hotline can provide information on finding local support groups and creating a safety plan.
